Stephen C. Hopkins, 77, an orthodontist in Northwest Washington for 45 years, died Jan. 30 at Georgetown University Hospital
of complications resulting from a fall. He was a resident most recently of Leisure World in Silver Spring.
Dr. Hopkins was born in Washington and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1945. He joined the Navy in 1947,
serving as a medical corpsman. After his military service, he received his undergraduate degree from George Washington
University in 1951 and his dental degree from Georgetown University in 1955.
Dr. Hop, as he was known to his patients, began his career practicing orthodontics at an office on K Street NW with his father,
Stephen C. Hopkins Sr., and later moved to the American University Park area in Northwest Washington, where he practiced
until his retirement in 2000.
He was a longtime member of the D.C. Dental Society and in 1975 was president of the Washington Dental Club. In 1997, he
was secretary of the Dental Progress Study Club.
He was a member of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club, where he was president in 1963 and 2000 to 2001. He also served on the
Kiwanis Foundation's executive board and was voted Kiwanian of the year in 1964, 1976 and 1999.
More recently, he was involved with the Association of Oldest Inhabitants of Washington, D.C., volunteering as the group's
treasurer. Since his retirement, he drove friends and acquaintances to meetings of various volunteer organizations. He enjoyed
reading about American history, and he liked to travel, most recently to a family reunion on Chincoteague Island.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Catherine Hopkins of Silver Spring; five children, Annette Abrams of Bethesda, Sarah
Hopkins of Rockville, Stephen C. Hopkins III of Germantown, Kenneth B. Hopkins of Rockville and Cassie Megarity of Baltimore;
three sisters, Nancy Knollman of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Connie Young of Springfield and Susan Veras of Gaithersburg; 14
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
