Stephen Herbert Paley

Stephen H. Paley, 71, co-founder of Paley Rothman, a law firm in
Bethesda, died Oct. 9 at Montgomery Hospice's Casey House. He had liver
cancer.

Before establishing his law firm in 1972, Mr. Paley worked in the Justice
Department's tax division.

He served as chairman of the Practicing Law Institute, a nonprofit
continuing education legal organization, where he also lectured.

Stephen Herbert Paley, a native Washingtonian, graduated from
Wilson
High School
in 1957 and received a bachelor's degree from Washington
and Lee University in Lexington, Va., in 1961. He graduated from
Georgetown University law school in 1964.

Mr. Paley lived in Dickerson and was a member of the National
Steeplechase Association and the Potomac Hunt Club, where he served as
treasurer.

His marriage to Maralyn Griff Paley ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife of four years, Lana Paley of Dickerson; three
children from his first marriage, Kevin Paley of Hebron, Ky., Shawn Paley
of Germantown and Stacey Bradshaw of Austin; two stepchildren, Natasha
Gorgue of London and Alex Parvizian of Dallas; two sisters, Stephanie
Blum of Delray Beach, Fla., and Susan Gordon of Rockville; and nine
grandchildren.
