Samuel J. Ligon Jr.

    Captain Samuel J. Ligon, Jr. USN (Ret.), 73, passed
away Wednesday, April 13, 2011. The funeral service will be
conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel
in Greenville. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at
a date to be determined.

    Captain Ligon was born in Washington, D.C. After graduating from
Woodrow Wilson High School, he received an appointment to the US
Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Upon graduation from the US Naval
Academy with the class of 1959, he attended USN Supply Corp School in
Athens, Ga. During 1960 to 1961, he served aboard the USS Cook (APD
130). He returned to shore duty, working in the Naval Purchasing Office in
Washington, D.C. from 1961 to 1964. He served aboard the USS Waddel
(DDG-24) from 1964 to 1966. Once again, he returned to Washington, D.C.
to work in the Naval Materials Headquarters from 1966 to 1968.

     He attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. from
1968 to 1969, earning a Masters of Science Degree in Computer Science.
Upon graduation, he spent 1970 to 1973 as a Defense Contracting Officer in
DCASR Atlanta. From 1973 to 1975, Captain Ligon served at the Naval
Supply Depot in the Subic Bay, Philippines. He then worked with the Naval
Supply Corp in Norfolk, Va. from 1975 to1978. From 1978 to 1983,
Captain Ligon was again stationed in Washington, D.C. Sam returned to the
DCASR Atlanta in 1983 and served as the Commanding Officer of the
South Eastern Region for the Department of Defense for military
contracting. Captain Ligon retired in 1987 in Atlanta after 27 years of
military service.

     Following his military service, Sam worked in procurement and
contracting for private government contractors in Virginia and Georgia.
He moved to Greenville with his wife, Virginia, in 2003. He was a member
of Grace Church, the Golden K Kiwanis Club, and participated in various
volunteer organizations. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend,
Sam will be greatly missed by many.

     He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ligon; daughter, Samantha J.
Stenger and husband, Larry, of Atlanta; son, Colin A. Ligon and wife,
Wendy, of Fairfax, Va.; granddaughter, Tiffany A. Stenger, of Atlanta;
stepdaughters, Natalie Cologgi and Anna Benitez; stepson, Christopher
Ballance; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

     The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkerson Funeral
Home.
