Robert Hutton Nicholson, 81, retired president of the R.H. Nicholson & Co. insurance firm in Northern Virginia, died of lung cancer Aug. 7 at his home in The Plains. Mr. Nicholson owned the insurance firm from 1962 until after his retirement 10 years ago. He previously worked for Aetna Casualty and Surety Co.
He was born in Washington and graduated from  Wilson High School. He served in the Navy in the Philippines during World War II. He graduated from the University of Maryland and attended George Washington University law school.
He was a member of Middleburg United Methodist Church, the Country Club of    Fairfax and Loudoun Golf and Country Club in Purcellville.
His wife, Eleanor Maddox Nicholson, died in 2004.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Nicholson Miller of Fairfax County; and    two grandchildren.
