Robert D. Reed

Robert D. Reed, 81, a career Army officer and public relations official, died of Parkinson's disease June 1 at his home in McLean.
A native Washingtonian, he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943 and from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He served in the Army for 22 years, primarily in public relations, then retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1972. He was awarded a Silver Star, Legion of Merit and the Purple Heart for his service during the Vietnam War and Korean War.
Col. Reed next became community relations director for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission in Prince George's County, a position he held until 1990.
He was a founding member and past president of the commission's retirees association. He belonged to National Presbyterian Church, where he volunteered at the library archives.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Reed of McLean; two children, Robert Reed Jr. of McLean and Susan Reed of Lewisburg, Pa.; a brother; and a stepbrother.
