Norman Francis Manders Sr., 79, chief executive of his family's Silver Spring paint and wallpaper business, died of pneumonia
Sept. 14 at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach, Fla., where he lived.
Mr. Manders, a Washington native, was still involved in his family's   business, Manders Decorating Co., as he had been his
entire adult life. He became president of the small company in 1949 when his father died, and it is one of the largest painting
and wallpapering contractors in the Washington area. It is now run by the fourth generation of the family.
Mr. Manders graduated from Wilson High School and served two years in the Merchant Marine before returning to the family
business. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Congressional Country Club. He moved from Potomac to Florida two years
ago.
His marriage to Mercedes B. Manders ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Susan Manders of Vero Beach; five children from his first marriage, Kathleen Dewey of
Lakeland, Fla., Norman Manders Jr. and Michael Manders, both of Potomac, and William Manders and Dorothy Sewell, both of
North Potomac; a stepdaughter, Jann Moylan of Vero Beach; a brother, Logan J. Manders of Delmar, Md.; and 19 grandchildren.
