John W. Barnes Jr., 66, a retired Navy lieutenant commander and Vietnam
War veteran who specialized in engineering assignments, died Jan. 21 at his
home in Springfield. He had melanoma.
Cmdr. Barnes served in the Navy from 1966 to 1986. His final active-duty
assignment was at the Washington Navy Yard. After his military retirement,
he spent the next 20 years as a computer consultant working with individuals
and small businesses

John Winthrop Barnes Jr., whose father was an Army officer, was born in
Plattsburgh, N.Y., and graduated from Wilson High School in Washington
in 1961.
He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1966 and
received a master's degree in computer science in 1972 from the Naval
Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
His military decorations included the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation
Medal.
He was a member of the Northern Virginia Computer Club and a volunteer
counselor with Us Too, a cancer support group.
Over the past four years, he clocked 10,000 miles on his recumbent bike
His son Lee died in infancy in 1967.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Tricia Davenport Barnes of
Springfield; two children, Christopher Barnes of Lusaka, Zambia, and
Virginia Meyers of Portland, Ore.; a sister; a brother; and five grandchildren.
