James Whitnell Cummings, 59, a Justice Department intelligence employee, died of complications from hepatitis May 12 at Georgetown
University Hospital.
A native Washingtonian, Mr. Cummings graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Lynchburg College. He spent five years on
active duty with the Army, serving in Vietnam, and then served in the Army Reserves. His military and post-military careers were spent in the
intelligence field. He received a master's degree in international studies from American University in 1973 and did some doctoral work at
Georgetown University. He retired from the Justice Department two years ago.
He was a member of numerous lineage organizations.
Survivors include a sister, Carolyn Glenn of Long Beach, Wash., and a brother, H. Greig Cummings Jr. of Bethesda.
