Frederick D. Carl, 88, an executive director of the national board of the Young Men's
Christian Association from 1975 to 1986 who was a liaison between the YMCA and the
Defense Department, died Feb.13 at William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay, Fla.
He had Alzheimer's disease.
Capt. Carl started his career with the YMCA in 1947 as director of the Cleveland Park
Extension Center in Washington. He then became director of the YMCA's Camp Letts
in 1952 before becoming associate general executive for the YMCA of Metropolitan
Washington.
In 1972, he relocated to Indianapolis to be executive director for the YMCA of Greater
Indianapolis until he was appointed to the YMCA's national board.
Frederick Daniel Carl, a District native, graduated from Wilson High School in 1939
and received a bachelor's degree in business from American University in 1947.
He served in the Navy during World War II and retired as a Navy Reserve captain in
1976.
He was a former president of the Naval Reserve Association and a commander general
of the Naval Order, a fraternal order of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and
Merchant Marine.
His wife of 45 years, Murial Hodges Carl, died in 1994.
Survivors include his wife of 12 years, Janet Macintosh Carl of Indialantic, Fla.; two
daughters from his first marriage, Cheryl Hughes of Lancaster, Calif., and Sandy
Barber of Boulder, Colo.; a brother, Don Carl of Kensington; five grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
