Donald MacLean Hillock, 82, a PE teacher who later was physical education supervisor for the D.C. public schools, died April 26 at Parrish
Medical Center in Titusville, Fla. He had diabetes and Parkinson's disease.
Mr. Hillock, a former resident of Adelphi, taught in the D.C. public school system for 32 years, before becoming a supervisor with oversight
of 119 schools. He retired in 1977.
A standout basketball player and coach, Mr. Hillock coached basketball and baseball at Georgetown Preparatory School. He and a friend,
Arthur Cranston, developed a summer day camp for the area's Catholic Youth Organization.
Mr. Hillock was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and at age 9 moved with his family to Washington. He graduated from Wilson Senior High School,
were he was captain of the basketball team and was once called Wilson's clever scoring machine.He scored the winning points in the
game that returned Wilson to the Southern Conference after a long hiatus.
Mr. Hillock continued to be a high scorer when he played at Washington and Lee University and American University. A southpaw with poise
and finesse, Mr. Hillock was a gaunt 6-foot-3 and known for his "deft hook shots," according to a 1947 Washington Post article.
While at Washington and Lee, Mr. Hillock enlisted in the Navy. During World War II, he was a Navy fighter pilot and flew Corsairs. He also
played basketball in the Navy with Glenview Naval Air Station in Illinois, according to The Post, and once outscored all-American George
Mikan in a game against DePaul University.
Last year, Mr. Hillock was inducted into the Jock's Hall of Fame.
His marriages to June Hillock, Jean Hillock and Nancy Walsh ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Jeanne Hillock of Titusville; five children from his first marriage, Gail Garren of Palm Beach, Fla.,
Kathleen Dunham of Rosemount, Minn., Donald Hillock Jr. of Pasadena, Ernest Hillock of Elkridge and June Cagiwa of Fruitland, Md.; a
daughter from his third marriage, Donna Walsh of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; six stepchildren, Andrew Spinella of Scottdale, Pa., Anthony
Spinella of Titusville, Katherine Miller of Connellsville, Pa., Michael Spinella of Columbia, Patricia Kalaitzis of Jacksonville, Fla., and John
Spinella of Oklahoma City; a brother; 25 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
