Amalia 'Marlie' Gillespie Phillips, 83, died of lung cancer at her home on Longview Terrace in Kennebunk, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19, 2011.
She was born in Quincy, Mass., on Dec. 18, 1927, the daughter of Michael Bernard Gillespie and Esther (Fairfield) Gillespie. Raised in Scituate, Mass., and Washington, D.C., she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1944 and earned a B.A. in Creative Writing from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin later in life.
While attending Art school in Washington, D.C., she met her first husband, Wilford Caloway Phillips. They were married in Rockville, Md., on Feb. 8, 1947, and were together 44 years until his death in 1991. She married her second husband, Warren Herbert Mitchell Jr. in January 1998. He predeceased her in 1999.
In addition to Massachusetts, Marlie lived in Texas and Florida before retiring to Maine. She was an auctioneer and antiques dealer in Texas, Florida and Maine. Marlie was also a published author of both short stories and children's stories. Her stories appeared in The Bicentennial Collection of Texas Short Stories, Fiction and Poetry by Texas Women and the Summer Weekly Reader.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for over fifty years, the Maine Auctioneers Association, and the Wells/Ogunquit Senior Center.
Survivors include three children, David Michael Phillips of Austin, Texas, Mark Lawrence Phillips of Burnet, Texas, and Lydia Ann Phillips of Kennebunkport; her sister-in-law, Irene Gillespie; grandchildren, Citabria Phillips, Anthony and Brian Phillips, Angela Chenuau, and Adrienne Whitley; eight great-grandchildren; and nephews, Bruce, Brian and Brett Gillespie. In addition to her parents and spouses, she was also predeceased by her brother, Richard F. Gillespie.
Calling hours will be on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A funeral service will be on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at 2 p.m., at Christ Church, 6 Dane St., Kennebunk. Spring burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.
