Wilbur J. 'Bud' Balderson

Wilbur J. "Bud" Balderson, 88, a former assistant staff director for the surgeon general of the Army, died of sepsis Nov. 21 at
Powhatan Nursing Home in Falls Church. He lived in Arlington County.
Mr. Balderson worked for the Department of the Army from 1946 until he retired in 1989. A native Washingtonian, he graduated
from
Roosevelt High School and attended Benjamin Franklin University. He worked briefly for the Red Cross before entering the
Army in 1943. He served in the medical supply division at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the next three years, then was
discharged and continued his employment as a civilian.
He rose from an assistant to the medical supply officer to deputy chief of  the logistics division. His final position was assistant
staff director in the  Deployable Medical Systems division. He contributed to the deployment of mobile  Army surgical hospitals
and medevac units and helped the Army change its uniform  camouflage patterns to desert hues before Operation Desert Storm.
Mr. Balderson enjoyed bowling and golfing and had been a Washington Redskins  fan since 1937.
His wife of 60 years, Betty Balderson, died in 1999.
He had no immediate family survivors.
