Virginia Evon Pearson Matthews

Evon P. Matthews, a clerk with the Virginia probation and parole office,
died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Aug. 1 at Capital Hospice in
Arlington.
Mrs. Matthews worked in the Arlington office of the Virginia probation and
parole division for 33 years, retiring in 1978.
She was born Virginia Evon Pearson in Washington and graduated from
Western High School. She worked briefly at the National War College until
joining the Virginia Department of Corrections.
She was a Sunday school teacher with Community United Methodist
Church in Arlington and enjoyed painting and bowling.
Survivors include her husband, Walter Matthews of Arlington; a daughter,
Valerie Goins of Fairfax County; two stepchildren, Walter Matthews Jr. of
Urbanna, Va., and Anita Jackson of Saluda, Va.; a sister, Zara Creel of
Holiday, Fla.; and a brother, Jack Pearson of Timonium, Md.
