Samuel Darlington "Buck" Turner Jr., 81, a retired sheet-metal worker at the U.S. Capitol who had also been an outstanding golfer and
softball player, died Aug. 8 of lung cancer at Capital Hospice in Arlington County. He lived in McLean.
Mr. Turner was born in Washington and was a graduate of the old Western High School. He served in the Navy during World War II.
He worked at Dixie Sheet Metal Works in Falls Church before joining the office of the Architect of the Capitol, where he spent 20 years until
his retirement in 1995.
For about 15 years, Mr. Turner was a catcher for fast-pitch softball teams in the Washington area. He was an excellent golfer and was the
club champion and senior champion at Cedar Crest Country Club in Fairfax County. He was also a member of Chantilly National Golf and
Country Club and Goose Creek Golf Club in Leesburg. He had five holes-in-one during his lifetime.
In retirement, Mr. Turner was a part-time starter and marshal at East Potomac Golf Course in the District and Falls Road Golf Course in
Potomac.
He was a member of the American Legion and volunteered with the Georgetown Big Brothers Club.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Pamela Bennett Turner of McLean; two sons, Jay Turner of Capon Bridge, W.Va., and Jeff Turner of
Vienna; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
