Robert A. McCullough, 86, a groundskeeper at Geico Insurance Co. for 40 years until retiring in 1993, died April 10 of cancer at the
Washington Home in the District.
Mr. McCullough, a native Washingtonian, graduated from Western High School in 1936. He was a short-order cook at Sholl's Colonial
Cafeteria in downtown Washington and served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific theater.
He loved Sholl's cafeteria. He was so proud of working at the downtown Washington eating institution, recalled family friend Pat Fowler.
She and another friend took Mr. McCullough to the restaurant -- known for its tasty, inexpensive meals -- before it closed for good in 2001.
He was a member for 57 years of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as an usher and as part of the finance
committee. He also bowled and played bridge.
He was a real old-fashion kind of guy, Fowler said. He never failed to say thank you. Even when he was dying in the hospital, he told the
nurses thank you.
He leaves no immediate survivors.
