Nancy Alger Graham

Nancy A. Graham, 81, an Arlington community activist, died Dec. 8 of ischemic colitis at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington County. She
lived in Arlington.

Mrs. Graham was public policy chairwoman of the Arlington chapter of the American Association of University Women and was its delegate
to the Arlington County Civic Federation. The federation gave her its Order of Distinguished Meritorious Service, its highest honor, in 2002.
She was a life member of the federation. She was also a member of the vestry and led the worship committee at St. George's Episcopal
Church in Arlington.

Born Nancy Alger in Atlanta, she grew up in Panama and Tennessee. She moved to Arlington in 1940 and graduated from the old
Western
High School
in Washington.

She attended the Women's College of the University of North Carolina until she married. Years later, she graduated from George Mason
University and in 1983 received her master's degree there. In graduate school, she was editor of the now-defunct Sociology Review, a
monthly publication of book reviews by academics in the field. Mrs. Graham joined the Veterans Administration in 1983, working as a health
policy analyst until she retired in 1994.

Her husband of 60 years, William M. Graham, died in June. A daughter, Margaret Graham, died in 1992.

Survivors include two children, David Graham of Centreville and Susan Graham of Winter Park, Fla.
