Mary Lee Schumaker, 97, who taught physical education in Montgomery
County Schools for 19 years, died Nov. 30 at Powhatan Nursing Home in
Falls Church. She had Alzheimer's disease.

Mrs. Schumaker taught in Damascus for several years in the 1930s and at
North Bethesda Junior High from its opening in 1955 until her retirement in
1970.

She had been a volunteer with the American Cancer Society for more than
10 years after being treated for breast cancer. She visited patients at
Suburban Hospital in the Reach for Recovery program.

Mary Lee Watkins was born in Washington and grew up in Somerset, a
town in Montgomery County. She graduated from the old
Western High
School
and from George Washington University.

She was a member of the Woman's Club of Bethesda. She played bridge.

Her husband of 37 years, Willard G. Schumaker, died in 1976. Survivors
include two children, Elizabeth Lee Henault of Monterey, Calif., and Joan
Schumaker Hession of Falls Church; five grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
