John P. "Phil" Fairchild, 91, an Army doctor whose specialty was pediatrics
and who retired in 1971 at the rank of colonel, died Feb. 16 at a nursing
home in Gulf Breeze, Fla., after a stroke. He had Alzheimer's disease.
Col. Fairchild joined the Army in 1942 and served in Europe during World
War II. He was among the first doctors attending the liberation of the Nazi
concentration camp Buchenwald.
He became chief of pediatrics at Brooke, Tripler and Walter Reed Army
medical centers in San Antonio, Honolulu and Washington, respectively. His
final active-duty assignment was executive officer at Walter Reed.
After his military retirement, he was chief surgeon at the Old Soldiers' Home
in the District and health director for northern Montgomery County. With
another doctor, he opened a clinic in the Kentucky coal-mining region.
John Phillip Fairchild, a native Washingtonian, was a graduate of Western
High School, George Washington University and GWU's medical school. He
moved to Florida from Montgomery Village in 2006 and was a former
member of Darnestown Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Julia Printz Fairchild of Gulf Breeze;
six children, Jean deTarnowsky of Amelia Island, Fla., John Fairchild Jr. of
Knoxville, Md., Jackie Auxt of Thurmont, Md., James Fairchild of
Philomath, Ore., Paul Fairchild of Gulf Breeze and Jeff Fairchild of
Bellingham, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
