John G. Lumpkin, born in Athens, Ga., on Sept. 6, 1921, passed away
quietly and peacefully in his home in Florida on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011.
He moved to Washington, D.C., in his early teens. He excelled in all
sports at Western High School and beyond.
He married Edna Mae Childs on Dec. 20, 1946, after serving four years
in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Dec. 20, 2011, would have been
their 65th wedding anniversary.
John is survived by his wife, Edna; their four children and their spouses;
five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was the heart and soul
of his large family. He had strong principles and values and passed those on
to his family over the years.
John's career was in the auto industry, working mainly for Chevy Chase
Chevrolet in Bethesda, Md., for 35 years. He was respected and loved by all
who worked with him. He could bring out the best in a person. A fitting
description of John was that he was a true gentleman.
After retiring in the early '80s, he and Edna moved to Lake of the
Woods and became actively involved in the church. It was an important part
of their lives. He fought cancer for several years and is now resting in peace
with the Lord.
A service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the
hospice of one's choice.
