Horace Miller Davis

    Lt. Col. Horace Miller Davis, 77, departed this world
on Feb. 12, 2011, in Newport News.

    He was born on Nov. 25, 1933, in Lexington, Va., to
Oray Madison Davis and Allie Byrd Johns Davis. At the
age of five, his family moved to Washington, D.C., where
he attended Rose Lee Hardy Elementary School in Georgetown, graduated
from
Western High School, at the age of 16, and in 1955, received a
degree in Business Administration from George Washington University,
where he was an ROTC Cadet and President of the Alpha Pi Chapter of
Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

    Horace joined the U.S. Air Force and received his pilot's wings at
Goodfellow AFB, Texas, in 1957, served three years active duty and 25
additional years in the USAF Reserves as Aircraft Commander of the C-130
and Commander of the 756th Squadron at Andrews AFB.

    He retired after 26 years with the U.S. Postal Service Headquarters
Office of Employee Relations in Washington, D.C. He was also Vice
President of Elegant Affordables, Inc., for 25 years.

    Through genealogy research, Horace discovered he was a descendent of
the Monacan Indian Nation (Tribe) in Amherst County, Va., in 1997. His
mother's photograph is displayed in the Monacan Indian Nation Museum in
Amherst County. Horace was an active member of Yorkminster
Presbyterian Church.

    Horace was preceded in death by his brother, Oray Madison Davis Jr.;
and his sister, Virginia Baxter Davis Waugaman.

    His memory will be forever treasured by his loving wife of 31 years,
Frances Harrington Davis; his children by an earlier marriage, Gregory
Madison Davis (Diane) of Arlington; Diana Davis Berend (Martin) of
Manassas; Janet Davis Kolbe (Doug) of Portsmouth; a granddaughter,
Audrey Davis Claunch; and a grandson, Barrett Gregory Claunch of Corn,
Okla.

    The funeral service and interment, with military honors, will be at the
National Memorial Park/King David Gardens, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls
Church, VA (703-560-4400) on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011 at 1 p.m. A
memorial service will be held at the Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, 6218
George Washington Memorial Highway, Grafton, on Sunday, Feb. 27,
2011, at 2 p.m.

    In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations to
St. Jude Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN
38148. Checks should be payable to St. Jude Hospital in memory of Horace
