Hetty Shear, 96, a Washington area church organist and piano teacher
from the 1930s to 1950s and from the 1960s to 1980s, died Dec. 28 at Holy
Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. She had pneumonia.
The death was confirmed by her daughter, Sharon Scott.
Hetty Louise Harkness was a native Washingtonian and a 1933
graduate of Western High School. She attended Agnes Scott College in
Decatur, Ga., on a music scholarship.
She was a Silver Spring resident and a member of University Baptist
Church in College Park, where she continued to play the piano for
Wednesday evening services until she was 95.
Her husband of 66 years, Cornelius B. Shear, died in 2002. Survivors
include three children, Sharon Scott of Riverdale, Stephen Shear of Short
Hills, N.J., and Myron Shear of Olney; nine grandchildren; and five great-
grandchildren.
