HARMAN, HENRIETTE DOLL 18 Jan 1923 - 2 Sept 2010
Died on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Assisted Living Well in
Millersville, MD, from complications and disabilities related to cerebral
bleeds sustained in 2002.
Born on Jan 18,1923 in Cologne, Germany, Henriette Doll emigrated to
Baltimore, MD in 1928 with her parents, Hubert and Katharina Doll, her
brother, Walter and sister, Christina. Her father, a skilled stonemason,
executed some of the historic marblework at Baltimore's Cloisters.
Henriette graduated from Western High School in 1939 and worked for the
B&O Railroad until 1951. In May 1947, she married Franklin Nelson
Harman, also of Baltimore. Franklin died in 2003 from complications related
to head injuries sustained in 2000 when he fell from the roof of their
Arundel-Beach-on-The-Magothy home.
Henriette was a devoted wife and mother, an avid reader, gardener and
tailor, sewing and knitting most of her and her daughters' clothes. She
enjoyed collecting antiques with her lifelong friend, Thelma Seagle. At
auctions around Baltimore and Annapolis, Henriette was a familiar sight,
knitting with yarns cached in her purse while on the bidding floor. She and
Franklin both were both skillful furniture restorers and refinishers.
The Harman Homestead on the Magothy was always open to family and
friends, with Henriette serving her special recipes for Maryland crab soup,
steamed crabs, German potato salad and Twistie cookies.
Living in Loch Raven Village until 1962, she served as neighborhood captain
for the Easter Seals Society and the American Heart Association. After the
Harmans moved to Severna Park, she began many years of volunteer
service to Meals on Wheels. She was a dedicated member of St. John the
Evangelist Catholic Church.
Henriette is survived by two daughters, Candace Catherine Harman of
Stuart, FL and Christina Doll Harman of Chester, PA, and her brother,
Herbert W. Doll of Walkersville, MD. Her sister, Christina Doll Hahn, of
Fairfax, VA, died in 1996.
Henriette's ashes will be buried with her parents in Holy Cross Cemetery in
Baltimore. In lieu of flowers, contributions are invited to Partners in Care, 6
S. Ritchie Hwy, Pasadena, 21122 or the Magothy River Association, POBox
550, Severna Park, 21146.
A joyful service will be held on Sunday, October 10th at noon at the home
of Ralph and Norma Darley, 426 Arundel Beach Rd., Severna Park. Details
