George R. Walter

George R. Walter, 87, a retired insurance executive and lifelong Washingtonian, died Oct. 17 of pneumonia at Sibley Memorial
Hospital.
Mr. Walter graduated from  Western High School in 1936 and received his undergraduate degree in political science and
economics from George Washington University in 1940.
During World War II, he served in the Army and was responsible for personnel and materiel movements for the India-Burma
theater. His decorations included the Bronze Star.
He received his law degree from Harvard University in 1947 and joined Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Co. as a lawyer. He retired
as senior executive vice president in 1981.
Mr. Walter was a member of Kiwanis, Columbia Country Club and Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ,
where he often served as usher and held leadership roles.
He had a passion for growing tomatoes and beans and baking bread.
A daughter, Betty Jane Walter, died in 1973.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Edith B. Walter of Washington; and a daughter, Anne Walter of Northfield, Minn.
