Frederick Chew Sr., 95, who served as a medical supply officer during World War II and later managed a Crystal City hardware store for more than
20 years, died May 29 at a hospital in Roanoke. He had pneumonia.
A native Washingtonian, Mr. Chew graduated from Western High School in 1931. He joined the Surgeon General's Office of the War Department
in 1935 as a civilian, and he negotiated the purchase of eyeglasses and artificial eyes for Army personnel. He joined the Army during World War II
and retired at the rank of captain in 1954.
After his military retirement, he worked as manager of Community Hardware in Crystal City until his retirement in 1979. He was a former Arlington
County resident who moved to Christianburg, Va., in retirement.
He enjoyed music and played the guitar and banjo. He was a dance instructor for an Arthur Murray dance studio in Washington. He was a member of
the American Legion.
His marriage to Annette Trott Chew ended in divorce. A son from that marriage, Michael Chew, died in 2007.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Barbara Schmid Chew of Christianburg; three children from his first marriage, Frederick Chew Jr. of
Stevensville, Md., David Chew of Moorestown, N.J., and Jeanne Ford of Annapolis; three sons from his second marriage, Robert Chew and Ronald
Chew, both of Blacksburg, Va., and Thomas Chew of Sharpsburg, Md.; 22 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
