Evelyn Pacini Comella Sardo
|

EVELYN COMELLA SARDO On Tuesday, September 21, 2010 passed
away peacefully at her home at Brighton Gardens in Chevy Chase, MD.
She was born in Vineland, NJ on October 8, 1915 to Agide and Emma
Pacini. Her only sibling, Henry Pacini, died in March of 2007. When the
children were young, the family moved back to Italy where she spent many
wonderful and memorable years living with her parents and brother in
Lucca, Italy. She loved this ancient city, and in later years returned every fall
to visit.
When the family returned to the United States, they settled in Washington,
DC where she finished high school at Western High School, and then
graduated from Immaculata Junior College in Washington, DC.
She worked at the Italian Embassy, and later met her first husband,
Lawrence J. Comella who was finishing at Georgetown School of Foreign
Service. While her husband was with the State Department, they lived for
several years in Santiago, Chile with their two oldest children. After returning
to Washington, they had two additional children and made this area their
permanent home.
Evelyn spent twenty-five years working in real estate for two prominent area
firms, Burr N. Johnson and W.C. & A.N. Miller. Her love of people and her
fluency in both Italian and Spanish enhanced her success in this business.
She continued working after the death of her husband in 1970. In 1981 she
married William H. Sardo, Jr. She and Bill were married for twenty-six
years, were completely devoted to one another, and enjoyed world travel
and spending the winters at their home in Delray Beach, Florida. Bill passed
away in 2007.
True to her Italian heritage, the most important thing in her life was her
family. She was an amazing cook and loved having everyone gathered
around the table. She had friends both here and around the world. She
enjoyed entertaining and conversation. She excelled at both.
Evelyn was a parishioner of The Church of the Little Flower, Bethesda, MD
for over 40 years, where she had been a member of the Sodality. She was
also a longtime member of Kenwood Golf and Country Club. She was a true
lady, from a different era, whose graciousness, elegance, and positive
outlook, will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by her devoted children, Lawrence Comella, Stephanie
Comella, and Rita Reaves (Robert). She is predeceased by her beloved
daughter, Marie Comella Fox. She leaves seven grandchildren, Michael Fox
(Robyn), Thomas Fox, Robert Fox, Stephen Fox, Stephanie Fox Heffernan
(Ian), Nicholas Reaves, and Emma Reaves. She is also survived by five
great grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren. She leaves a multitude of
other relatives and friends including her family and caregivers at Brighton
Gardens in Chevy Chase.
Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation to be held at Joseph
Gawler''s Sons, Inc., 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, DC on
Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian
Burial will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2010 at 12 Noon at the
Church of the Little Flower, 5607 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, MD
20816.
Interment will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be sent to S.O.M.E., 71 O
Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001.
