Edward Addison Dent

2008
Edward Addison Dent, 93, who was a vice president and senior trust officer of the American Security Bank and Trust, died of
congestive heart failure March 6 at his home in Washington.
Mr. Dent, a longtime active member of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, was a third-generation Washingtonian and a
graduate of the old
Western High School. He worked  while attending night classes at Columbus University School of Law,
now a part of Catholic University, and received a law degree in 1938. In 1940, he joined the National Bank of Washington, which
merged with American Security Bank in 1958. He retired in 1978.
During his banking career, Mr. Dent served as chairman of the fiduciaries section of the D.C. Bankers Association and president
of the Washington D.C. Estate Planning Council. For several years, he was treasurer of the Central Dispensary and Emergency
Hospital.
He also served as a member of the board of trustees of Immaculata College in Washington and a director and treasurer of
the Christ Child Society of Washington.
During World War II, he served as chairman of the Oyster School Ration Board and was a member of Advisory Board 4 of the
area selective service system.
He was a member of the University Club and the National Lawyers Club.
He was an active member of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. He served as a member of the parish council and was
president of the parish Home and School Association and the Holy Name Society.
For a number of years, Mr. Dent maintained the church's tower chimes and was one of the few people in the United States
qualified to service Deagan Tower chimes.
Until five years ago, Mr. Dent would go into the bell tower and work on the rods and motors, said his son Michael Gregory Dent of
Kensington. "He rebuilt all those motors."
The chimes didn't work when he started about 20 years ago, his son said. Now a committee takes care of the bell chimes.
Survivors, besides his son, include his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth Cox Dent of Washington; five other children, Edward A.
"Chip" Dent III of Washington, Daniel Joseph Dent of Bethesda, Penelope Ann Driscoll and Patricia Marie Delany, both of Chevy
Chase, and Elizabeth Ellis of Washington; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
