David H. Dove, a clothing salesman and volunteer who mentored people
who, like him, had to regain the ability to speak after a laryngectomy,
died Feb. 6 at Sunrise at Mount Vernon of cardiopulmonary arrest. The
Alexandria resident was 83.
Mr. Dove worked at the Lewis and Thomas Saltz clothing store in the
1960s until his cancer diagnosis and laryngectomy in 1969. After the
surgery, as a volunteer with the New Voice Club of Northern Virginia,
he helped other patients learn how to use techniques such as esophageal
speech.
David Harding Dove was born in Washington in 1926 and graduated
from the old Western High School. He served two years in the Army.
Mr. Dove was named a volunteer of the year by the Parkfairfax
Condominium Association.
His wife of 28 years, Virginia Callahan Dove, died in 1999.
