Barbara Reed, 80, a former businesswoman and Democratic Party activist in Fairfax County, died Aug. 13 at a son's home in Fairfax
County. She had lung cancer.
From 1974 to 1991, Mrs. Reed helped run her husband's business, Envelopes Inc., an envelope printing and manufacturing company. She
also was active in local politics, serving as a Democratic Party precinct chairman in Fairfax in the 1960s.
Barbara Joan Desper was born in the District. She graduated from the city's Western High School in 1947 and attended Mary Washington
College, now the University of Mary Washington, in Fredericksburg.
She drove a school bus for St. Louis Catholic School in Alexandria in the late 1950s and early 1960s and then began working at the
National Technical Information Service, a Commerce Department agency.
Her volunteer activities included the Virginia Hills community association,
Little League and parent-teacher groups.
Mrs. Reed and her husband of 52 years, Leonard Reed, retired in 1991, having lived in Fairfax and Alexandria for nearly 40 years. They
moved to New Bern, N.C., in 1993. Mr. Reed died in 2001. Their son Mark Reed died in 2006.
Survivors include three children, Barbie Greene of Powder Springs, Ga., Christopher Reed of Fairfax Station and Kevin Reed of Annandale;
nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
