Butch was a mailer with the Washington Post Newspaper for 25 years. Prior to
Washington Post, he worked for Merkle Press in Glendale, MD and the
Washington Star Newspaper. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in La Plata, and the Archbishop Neale Council of the Knights of Columbus in La
Plata. He was an administrative officer with Company 12 Westlake Division
Waldorf Fire and Rescue Squad. He loved fishing, hunting, bowling, playing cards,
and his country music. In his early years, he was a treasurer for the Boy Scouts
and a soccer coach for Prince George’s County.
Son of the late Curtis L. Birley, Sr., and the late June Laverne Hickerson Birley.
Predeceased his parents.
Survived by his wife, June Murphy Birley; step-dad, John D. Pollard; one son,
John C. Birley of Colonial Beach, VA; one daughter, Karen M. Birley of Newburg,
MD; three brothers, Clifton Birley of ILL, Gene Pollard of AL, Ricky Pollard of
Massachusetts; three sisters, Darlene Morrison of Iowa, Dana Pollard of California,
and Lisa Gamble of Alabama. Also survived by 2 grandchildren, Constance and
Daniel Benfield.
Visitation: Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM with Wake Service and
Knights of Columbus service at 7 PM at Raymond Funeral Chapel (5635
Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646 - 301-934-2920).
Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, May 14, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church - La Plata, MD

Interment: St. Peter’s Catholic Church Cemetery - Waldorf, MD.
