Elaine Lilja Smith
Elaine Lilja Smith passed away at the age of 85 on March 24,2019 peacefully surrounded by
her family at The Hearth in Hendersonville, TN. She was born in Minneapolis, MN on October 3,
1933 to Gunnar and Nina Lilja.
She grew up in the Maryland/Washington, DC area and married her high school sweetheart,
Robert S. Smith on October 3,1953. While raising 3 children she enjoyed singing in the church
for Francis Asbury Church for many years and was a long time member of Baylake United
Methodist Church where she was active in the choir and bell choir. She loved singing and was a
member of the Tidewater Women’s Choir.
She moved to Hendersonville, TN 4 years ago to be closer to her daughter and her family. The
last 4 years she was enjoying life by playing bingo, going out with the Lunch Bunch group
from The Hearth, reading books and loved listening to music. She was lovingly taken care of in
her final days by family, staff and hospice.
She had a sarcastic sense of humor, quick wit and a laugh that will be remembered. Our Pip
will be missed by many who got to know and love her.
Elaine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert S. Smith 02-11-19; Son, Scott
Michael Smith and brother-in-law Clifford Harrison. She is survived by her Sister, Dorothy
(Clifford)
Harrison; Children, Sandra (Michael) Hoke and Stephen R. Smith; Daughter in law, Carol
(Scott) Smith; Grandchildren,Stephen R. Smith and his long time girlfriend, Stephanie Kelly,
Ericka (Benny) Clark, Joshua Smith, Jill (Chris) Kelly-Oden, Michael Smith and Melissa Toxey.
She loved her great grandchildren: Jared Smith, Madison Likens, Logan Clark, Kayla Smith,
Ethan Kelly, Noah Kelly, Madie Oden, Alexander Smith, Isabella Kelly, Raelin Oden and Maxwell
Smith, As well as 11 nieces and nephews.
We will be having a private family celebration of life ceremony by placing her ashes out to sea
along with her husband and son’s ashes.
