Warren W. Smith, 71, a retired accountant with the
Veterans Benefits Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Veterans
Affairs, died Sept. 27 at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington County. He had
cancer.

Mr. Smith spent 34 years with what became the Department of Veterans Affairs
before retiring in 2001.

Warren Wesley Smith was born in Washington. He attended
McKinley
Technical High School
in the District and graduated from Gaithersburg High
School in 1957.

After graduation, Mr. Smith served in the Coast Guard Reserve while working at
Suburban Trust bank in Rockville and a Sears department store in Washington.
He received a bachelor's degree from American University in 1967.

He was a member of Fairlington United Methodist Church in Arlington and Luther
Rice Memorial Baptist Church in Silver Spring.

He had no immediate survivors.

Warren "Wes" W. Veterans Employee Warren W. Smith, 71, an accountant with the US
Department of Veterans Affairs from 1967 until his retirement in 2001 and a native of the
Washington DC area, died September 27 at the Virginia Hospital Center. He had cancer.

Mr. Smith began his Federal government career in the Fiscal Services Division of the
Veteran's Hospital Center in Washington DC. In 1970, he transferred to the
Comptroller's Office of the US Veterans Administration headquarters in downtown
Washington. His last position was as accountant with the Veterans' Benefits
Administration in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He retired after 34 years of service at the end of 2001. Prior to his US Government
career, Mr. Smith worked at Suburban Trust Bank in Rockville, Maryland and at Sears
and Roebuck in Washington DC.

Wes Smith was born in Washington DC in 1939. He attended Paul Junior High School
and
McKinley High School.

In 1956, he moved with his family to the Gaithersburg, Maryland area and he graduated
from Gaithersburg High in 1957.

After high school, he served in the US Coast Guard Reserves, attended Montgomery
Junior College and obtained a B.S. degree in Business Administration from American
University in 1967.

In the mid 1970's, Wes relocated from Gaithersburg, Maryland to Arlington, Virginia.
Wes enjoyed many hobbies and interests. An active sports enthusiast, he ran, swam,
sailed, skied, biked, bowled and played pool.

He held Maryland University football and basketball season passes for years and
attended many other local sporting events. He was a frequent US and world traveler and
had visited Europe many times with friends as well as North Africa, numerous countries
in Latin America, and the Caribbean. He traveled this past year to the Mediterranean
and Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

After retirement, he expanded his interests and he spent many summer days at the
Delaware and Maryland beaches. He enjoyed social events, conversation, and dining out
at many restaurants in the Washington DC area.

Mr. Smith was a member of Fairlington Methodist Church in Arlington, Va and Luther
Rice Baptist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland.

His parents, Hazel Mell Smith and Warren W. Smith, preceded him in death, as did his
sister, Shirley Kanes, who passed away in June. He is survived by his cousins Carol
Russell of Wheaton, Md.; Wilma Wiest of Columbia, Md.; and Wayne Croson of
Glenwood, Md., and by his niece Amy E. York of Leeburg, Va.; and nephew Andrew S.
Kanes of Chapel Hill, NC.; and by his brother-in-law Donald K. Kanes of Falls Church,
VA.
