Thomas A. Scanlon, 72, an executive with several Washington banks, died of a heart attack Jan. 15 at his home in Bethesda.
A lifelong Washingtonian, Mr. Scanlon grew up in Northeast Washington and attended St. Anthony's High School before
graduating from McKinley High School. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from the District's old Benjamin Franklin
University in 1959.
In 1951, he began working for City Bank of Washington, which later became American Security Bank. He served in the Army from
1954 to 1956, then resumed his banking career at American Security. He was promoted to vice president of commercial lending
in 1971. During his tenure at American Security, he worked closely with numerous labor unions and served as a public trustee
for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
In 1977, Mr. Scanlon joined Madison National Bank as a senior vice president and, in 1983, was named executive vice president
and was responsible for all commercial lending. After retiring from Madison in 1989, he worked in commercial real estate for
several years.
Mr. Scanlon was active in the metropolitan Washington Catholic Youth Organization and served as its president in 1977. He was
a member of St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church in Bethesda for 36 years and served as a youth baseball coach at the church
in the 1970s.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Barbara A. Scanlon of Bethesda; two sons, Michael J. Scanlon of Olney and Thomas K.
Scanlon of Rockville; a brother, William Scanlon of Fishers, Ind.; two sisters, Peggy Redmond of Ashburn and Dolores Gill of
North Andover, Mass.; and two granddaughters.
