

SUSIE WOOTEN PAYNE
Susie Payne, career Federal civil servant, died in Tucson, AZ on Wednesday,
May 18, 2011. Born on a farm in Pitt County, NC in 1913.
Upon early death of her father in 1929, Wooten family moved to Washington,
DC. Susie graduated from McKinley High School and earned an Accounting
Degree from Benjamin Franklin University.
She is survived by sister-in-law Edna, brothers James (career FBI) and Guy
(CDR, USN) and Guy's wife Mary Ryan.
Over the decades, Susie served in a number of Federal agencies including
GSA, SEC,and CIA in Washington, DC, Philadelphia and the island territory of
Saipan.
She was an avid gardener and a Master in the game of Bridge.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leverett Payne, a
brother, three sisters, and their spouses. Her mother Helen served in the Navy
Department from the decade of the 1930's, until retirement after World War II.
Nearly all of her brothers and sisters and their spouses were employed by the
Federal Government. Her oldest brother Herbert reached the top Civil Service
grade.
Susie's husband, Leverett served as an Army Ranger in WWII, landing on the
beaches of France after DDay. Three brothers and a brother-in-law also served in
the three branches of the military in WWII.
