Stuart O. Thompson

Stuart O. Thompson, 96, who was president of Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association until the late 1970s, died of
esophageal cancer Sept. 13 at a niece's home in Dayton. He lived in Potomac.
Mr. Thompson worked at Washington Federal for 35 years and, after retiring, continued as chairman of the board for about five
years. He was active in the financial community and served as president of the Washington chapter of the American Savings
and Loan Institute and the Metropolitan Washington Savings and Loan League. He held board positions with civic and other
institutions as well.
Mr. Thompson was born in Morgantown, W.Va., and was an infant when his family moved to the District. He graduated from
McKinley Technical High School
and Southeastern University. He received an advanced degree from the American Savings and
Loan Institute. He started as secretary at what was then the Washington Permanent Building and Loan.
A horseman all his life, Mr. Thompson, with his wife, had a horse farm in West Virginia. He was an avid golfer and a member of
Columbia Country Club.
His wife of 73 years, Lillian Gladys Thompson, died in 2005.
Survivors include two sons, Robert C. Thompson of Ormond Beach, Fla., and John S. Thompson of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; a
brother, John H. Thompson of Reston; six grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
