Richard S. Ray Sr., 78, who retired in the early 1980s as a vice president of Long Fence construction company, died April 14 at
Anne Arundel Medical Center. He had lung cancer.
Mr. Ray spent about 20 years at Long Fence. Afterward, he was an owner with other family members of 424 Wine and Spirits in
Crofton, his town of residence.
Richard Shannon Ray Sr. was a native Washingtonian and attended McKinley Technical High School.
He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and participated in the Chosin Reservoir campaign. His decorations
included the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crofton and the Kiwanis Club.
His wife, Elizabeth Neumann Ray, whom he married in 1952, died in 2002.
Survivors include six children, Donna Davis of Gambrills and Richard Ray Jr., Robert Ray, David Ray, Terri Ray and Patricia
Miranda, all of Crofton; a sister; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
