Richard H. Winkelman, 91, who joined the Washington-based Firemen's
Insurance Co. at age 17 and retired 50 years later as chairman and chief
executive, died Oct. 12 of heart disease at his home in Rockville.
Mr. Winkelman, a native Washingtonian, joined Firemen's as a bookkeeper in
1936. In 1959, he became a company director, and by 1982, he was president.
He later became chairman and chief executive.
He was also an executive of the Washington insurance firm Howard & Hoffman
and vice president and treasurer of Home Casualty & Surety Co
.
Richard Henry Winkelman was born in Washington. He graduated from
McKinley Technical High School in 1935. He received bachelor's and master's
degree in commercial science from Southeastern University, in 1937 and 1938
respectively. He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Winkelman was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Washington.
He was a past president of the Reciprocity Club of Bethesda, a business
networking group.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Helen Meyer Winkelman of Rockville; two
children, Patricia Winkelman of Potomac and Peter Winkelman of North
Potomac; and two grandsons.
