Richard B. Mathias, 81, an administrative law judge, died May 30 of cancer at University Community Hospital in Tampa, where
he lived. He was a former Bethesda resident.
Mr. Mathias was born in Washington and graduated from McKinley Technical High School in 1943. He served in the Navy
during and after World War II.
He was a graduate of George Washington University and graduated in 1952 from its law school. He began his legal career in
1954 as a trial lawyer with the Federal Trade Commission.
In 1972, he was appointed an administrative law judge with the Social Security Administration in Mobile, Ala. Two years later, he
became administrative law judge in charge at the Tampa office, where he served until retiring in 1985.
When he lived in Bethesda, Mr. Mathias was a member of North Chevy Chase Christian Church, where he was a deacon and
chairman of a building committee. He also was a member of the Potomac River Sail and Power Squadron, a boating group.
In Florida, he belonged to several boating and yachting groups.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mildred M. Mathias of Tampa; four sons, Thomas R. Mathias of Palm City, Fla., James B.
Mathias of Tampa, John R. Mathias of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Richard H. Mathias of Tampa; and nine grandchildren.
