Michael "Micky" Fontana, 79, a retired lithographer, died Nov. 8 of cardiac arrest at his home in Wheaton.
He was born in Washington and graduated from McKinley Technical High School. During World War II, he served in the Army in the
Aleutian Islands.
In 1955, he moved to Wheaton and began a career in printing, working among other places at Progressive Color in Rockville and ProLith
Color in Beltsville. He was a member of the Graphic Communications International Union, Local 285.
After his retirement in 1989, Mr. Fontana developed a passion for senior softball. As his teams advanced to Senior Olympics across the
country, he won numerous medals and trophies. He also enjoyed bowling and gardening. He volunteered with AARP and the Holiday Park
Senior Center.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Laura T. Fontana of Wheaton; three children, Michael S. Fontana of Wheaton, Rosemarie Gallant of
Silver Spring and Joanne Munson of Olney; two brothers, Emanuele Fontana of Manassas and Humbert Fontana of Newport, N.C.; four
sisters, Maria Corvelli of Alexandria, Anna Cassady of Alexandria, Helen Colevas of Dunkirk and Gloria Keller of Ocean View, Del.; and three
grandsons.
