Margaret M. Wilkinson, 79, a leading secular member of a Catholic religious order for more than 40 years, died Aug. 10 at the home of her
daughter in Urbana after a heart attack. She was a former Rockville resident and had lived in Adamstown for the past several years.
Mrs. Wilkinson, a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites, led retreats and conferences on Carmelite spirituality. She wrote a
book, "Finding the Mystic Within You" (1986), based on her talks on contemplative prayer.
The book was translated into French and Chinese, and she made a related video, "The Mystical Life." For prospective members of the
order, she wrote the Carmelite Formation Syllabus, which examines the works of Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross.
"She was a great Carmelite, and she had a big influence on a lot of people outside her own community" of Frederick, said the Rev. Regis
Jordan, the order's provincial delegate for the Midwest region.
That region includes the Northeast and extends west to Wisconsin and south to the Carolinas. It also takes in Florida. There are more than
3,500 members of the secular order in the region, he said, and Mrs. Wilkinson counseled and taught many people interested in joining.
Margaret Dimond was born in Washington and graduated from McKinley Technical High School. She studied art in New York for about a
year and then returned to the Washington area, married and began raising a family.
Her husband of 54 years, Thomas A. Wilkinson, died in 2006.
Survivors include eight children, Lynn Aminzadeh of Darnestown, Karen DiVincenzo of Walkersville, Donna Johnson of Damascus, Julie
Zaldumbide of Urbana, Stephen Wilkinson of Frederick, Michael Wilkinson of Rockville, Gary Wilkinson of Kensington and Gregg Wilkinson
of Laurel; three brothers, James R. Dimond of Annandale, Robert Dimond of Naples, Fla., and Thomas Dimond of Bethesda; a sister,
