Jeanne C. Smith, 87, a longtime executive secretary who was responsible for constituent affairs for then-Rep. Fernand St.
Germain (D-R.I.) from 1969 to 1989, died of lung ailments Jan. 30 at a hospice in Westminster, Md.
From 1947 to 1963, Miss Smith served as executive secretary first to Honduras's ambassador to the United Nations and
then to its ambassador to the United States. She later held secretarial jobs with then-Postmaster General Lawrence
O'Brien and two Democratic legislators on Capitol Hill before joining St. Germain's office.
Jeanne Carolyn Smith was born in Baltimore and raised in Washington, where she graduated from McKinley Technical
High School. She then studied fashion design in New York.
In retirement, she moved from Silver Spring to Florida and then, in 2006, to Taneytown, Md., in Carroll County.
She enjoyed opera and classical music and doing needlework.
Survivors include a sister, Sylvia Thompson of Taneytown; and a brother, Theodore Smith of McLean.
