Jean Francis 'Buddy' Carlton, 87, who retired from Anne Arundel County schools in 1976 as head of the guidance department at
Southern Senior High School in Harwood, died June 19 at his farm in Harwood. He had cancer.
Mr. Carlton spent most of his 27-year teaching career at Southern. He also spent 60 years farming the 260-acre Browsley Hall
Farm.
He was born in Birmingham and grew up in Washington, where he was a 1937 graduate of McKinley Technical High School.
He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, from which he also received a master's degree in agricultural education.
He was a founding member and charter president of the Lothian Ruritans service organization, a member and former treasurer
of Christ Episcopal Church in West River, a former president of the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County, and a former
chief judge of the county Board of Elections.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hughes Carlton, whom he married in 1942, of Harwood.
