James J. Waters

James J. Waters, 84, a World War II veteran and retired employee of Potomac Electric Power Co., died Dec. 30 of congestive
heart failure at his home in Vienna.
Mr. Waters was born in the District, where he attended Holy Name Academy and graduated from McKinley Technical High
School
in the early 1940s. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 and was with the 5th Army in North Africa and Italy and the
10th Army in the Pacific. He joined PEPCO in 1946. During his long career he served as a liaison between PEPCO and the
Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, with duties involving right-of-way issues. He retired in 1986.
Mr. Waters was active in youth baseball when his sons were growing up in Vienna. He was a Babe Ruth League coach in the
1960s for an undefeated team that included his two eldest sons, and he was a league regional director, state director and
president. In 1971, the Vienna Babe Ruth League christened Waters Field, the baseball field next to the Vienna Community
Center, in his honor. He was inducted into the Babe Ruth League Hall of Fame in 1999.
In retirement, Mr. Waters spent time at the family beach house in Rehoboth Beach, traveled with friends and stayed in touch with
the PEPCO lunch bunch.  Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Doris Waters of Vienna; four children, Michael Waters of Vienna,
Tim Waters of Fairfax, Tom Waters of Front Royal and Jeanne Calandro of Annapolis; two sisters; a brother; 13 grandchildren;
and 11 great-grandchildren.
