Helen Roumel, 88, a former employee of the old WTOP-TV, died Feb. 12 of a
stroke at Collingswood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Rockville.

From 1960 to 1980, Mrs. Roumel was a secretary at WTOP, which later became
WUSA-TV. Before her work at the station, she was a full-time homemaker.

Helen Stephanos was born in Danville, Va., and her parents moved to Washington
when she was a toddler. She attended
McKinley High School.

In January 1961, dressed as a Greek goddess, Mrs. Roumel rode in a float during
President John F. Kennedy's inaugural parade.

She was a member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington.
Her husband of 41 years, John T. Roumel, died in 1983.

Survivors include two children, Angelina Roumel of Washington and Theodore J.
Roumel of Potomac; and two grandchildren.
