PORTLAND -- George Edward Dewey Filgate, Jr., 91, passed away on August 6, 2011, from injuries sustained in a car accident.
He was born on June 30, 1920 in Washington, DC, the son of George E. D. Filgate, Sr. and Edna (Tobin) Filgate. He married Irene Leighton of Spring Lake, N.J., in 1941.
He graduated from McKinley High School, Washington, DC, and attended the University of Maryland before joining the Army in 1944. After the war, he moved with his family to New Jersey and took a job with the Asbury Park Press. By hand, he built the family home in nearby Sea Girt, N.J. He retired in 1982, and he and his wife moved to Maine.
George had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. In his youth, he and his sister Ann were an acclaimed dance team in the Washington, DC area, and throughout his life he enjoyed attending plays and concerts. He loved all styles of music, particularly jazz. He was artistically gifted, a creative poet and a skilled woodcarver. Family and friends treasure his beautifully designed and carved bellows.
He was the proud host father of three American Field Service exchange students with whom he has maintained a close relationship; Yamrot Kinfu of Ethiopia, Vibeke Galsbo of Denmark and Peter Neumann of Germany.
He is survived by his two sons, George E. D. Filgate, III and his wife Patricia Marshall, of Eugene, Ore., Robert M. Filgate and his wife Janeth Filgate, of Biddeford, a daughter Carol Furman and her husband John Furman of Gray; five grandchildren, Jason Filgate of Portland, Laura Clebak and her husband Kenneth Clebak, of Dover, N.H., Ellen Filgate of Ashland, Ore., and Claire Filgate and Paula Filgate of Eugene, Ore.; and a great-granddaughter, Madeleine Irene Clebak of Dover, N.H.
He was predeceased by his sister Ann and his beloved wife Irene.
