Francis J. Crilley Jr., 88, an ophthalmologist in private practice in his native Washington for more than 40 years
before retiring in 1989, died Dec. 30 at his home in Kensington after a stroke.

Dr. Crilley trained at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia before starting his practice. He had also served in the
Army Medical Corps in Europe during World War II.

Francis Joseph Crilley Jr. was a graduate of  
McKinley Technical High School and the University of Maryland,
where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He was a 1943 graduate of George Washington University medical
school.

Besides several professional groups, his memberships included Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, where he
had served on the board, and the Upper Northeast Social Club of McKinley alumni.

His wife of 60 years, Edith Rupertus Crilley, died in August.

Survivors include eight children, Kathleen Fulmer of Memphis, Eileen Griffiths of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., Francis J.
Crilley III of Melbourne, Fla., Mary Crilley of Washington, Patricia Wigmore of Silver Spring and James Crilley, Ann
Davis and Michael Crilley, all of Chevy Chase; and 19 grandchildren.
