Frances P. Logan, 80, the first female high school principal in Prince George's County public schools, died of peritonitis and
respiratory failure July 8 at Laurel Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Logan was named principal of Laurel High School in 1976. She was the first woman to head a high school in the county, the
school system said in an award certificate years later. She held that job until she became director of career and vocational
education for the Prince George's public schools. She retired in 1992 after 38 years as a teacher, principal and administrator.
Frances Palumbo was born in Atlantic City and grew up in Washington. She graduated from McKinley Technical High School
and the old Wilson Teachers College. She received a master's degree in education in the 1970s from what is now Bowie State
University.
Mrs. Logan began teaching at St. Bernard Catholic School in the Riverdale area and St. Ambrose Catholic School in Cheverly
before joining the Prince George's school system.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Logan worked to expand educational opportunities for children and career opportunities for women
and minorities. She worked on the Title IX Committee and Women's Commission of the county's public schools and was a member
of the National Coalition for Sex Equity in Education. In 1994, she was named by the county as one of its top 50 "women of
achievement."
In 2002, Mrs. Logan moved from her home of 50 years in Riverdale Park to the Riderwood Village retirement center in Silver
Spring, where she was a member of the resident advisory council. She also had maintained a home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., since
1979. She enjoyed playing cards and mah-jongg and was a member of Riderwood's Resurrection Catholic Community.
Her husband, Patrick H. Logan, died in 1980, and a son, Michael Logan, died in 2006.
Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Logan of Washington, Patrick Logan of Deale and Frank Logan of Edgewater; a sister,
Josephine P. Fannon of Silver Spring; a brother; and 12 grandchildren.
