MANCHESTER -- Edward D.A. Gleason, 78, passed away peacefully with
his family by his side on July 27, 2011, at his home after a long illness.
He was born on June 25, 1933, in Washington, D.C. He attended McKinley
Tech High School, Montgomery College and Catholic University. He received a
college degree from the University of Maine at Augusta.
He served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1952 to 1956 during the
Korean War, serving two tours on the ice breaker The Westwind W281 in the
Arctic. He continued to serve his country in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves for
many years.
Ed married his soulmate, Tennie Annette Miracle Gleason on April 3, 1962.
They were blessed with seven children and together enjoyed many adventures
working and traveling overseas and finally settling on their farm in Manchester.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, Edward F. and Julia M. Gleason. He is
survived by his wife of 49-plus years, Tennie Annette; his children and their
spouses, Edward Jr., Tennie Shardlow, Kathleen Cassidy, Bridget Brozyna, Nora
Dore, Geneva Eldridge and Niall Gleason; as well as his 18 grandchildren,
Meghan, Connor and Abigail Gleason, Hunter Harrington, Michael and Matthew
Weeks, James, Thomas and Jonathan Cassidy, Lindsey, Shannon and Joseph
Brozyna, Katherine and Alexander Dore, Erin Gleason, Adrien Tourtelotte, and
Dustin and Marissa Eldridge.
Visiting hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 31, 2011, at Plummer
Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A brief service will be held at 10 a.m.,
Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at 10 a.m., at the funeral home, immediately followed by a
graveside committal service with full military honors at St. MIchael (formerly St.
Mary's) Cemetery on U.S. Route 202, Manchester. A reception will follow the
graveside service at the Manchester Lions Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the American
