     Edgar W. Whitman Jr., 89, a longtime resident of Big Pine Key, Fla., died
Sunday, January 23 at his son's home, after a battle with Cancer.

     He was born August 6, 1921 in Montreal Canada. Mr. Whitman graduated
from
McKinley Tech High School in Washington, D.C. and enlisted in the U.S.
Air Corps on December 8, 1941. After flight school he served as a B-24 pilot flying
many missions from Burma, over "the Hump"to Kunming, China, as a 2nd
Lieutenant.
     
     Following his military service, he became a printer at The Evening Star
Newspaper in Washington, D.C. where he worked for almost 20 years. In the
1960's he operated a charter fishing business on Chesapeake Bay.

     In 1970 he moved to Big Pine Key where he worked as a commercial
fisherman until his health necessitated his move to Maryland to be with his sons.
He is preceded by his parents; first wife, Bettie Whitman; and his longtime
companion, Mary Heitzman.

     He is survived by his second wife Sarah Jane (Sally); his two sons, John and
William; four granddaughters, Jennifer, Nicole, Amelia, and Maria; three
great-grandchildren, Hailey, Tyler, and Madison; many friends in Maryland and in
The Keys.
