Charles R. Gill, 87, a retired printer with the National Geographic Society,
died suddenly at his Rockville, MD home early in the morning of May 2, 2011.
Born September 15, 1923, in Washington, DC, he graduated from
McKinley
Technical High School
in 1941.

He worked at National Geographic from the mid-1940's until retiring in 1985.
He served two stints in the Army, completing basic training in 1948 and being
recalled in 1950 at the outbreak of the Korean War. Most of his time in the service
was spent at Fort Belvoir.

A center fielder, he played baseball for several years in the better industrial
leagues around Washington, mainly with a team sponsored by Bambi Bakery. He
later played softball with a team from National Geographic and bowled for many
years in local leagues. He was an avid baseball fan, following the Washington
Senators and more recently the Baltimore Orioles.

He loved to travel, and over the years visited such places as Australia, China,
Alaska, Hawaii, England and Switzerland.

In 1951 he married Lois Stuntz, who died in 1992. They had moved to
Takoma Park in 1959, and he remained in that house until 1997, when he moved
to a unit at the National Lutheran Home in Rockville.

He is survived by two sons, Bob and Tom Gill. Another son, Stephen, died in
1959, just a few weeks after his birth. Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8
p.m., Monday at Gasch's Funeral Home in Hyattsville, MD.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday at Cheverly United
Methodist Church, followed by burial at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood,
MD.
