Robert George Fuerst Sr., 93, a chemist who retired from what became the Maryland Department of Agriculture, died Aug. 9 of
congestive heart failure at his home in Riverdale.
Mr. Fuerst was born in Silver Spring, moved to Riverdale at age 6 and graduated from St. John's Military Academy in the District
in 1934. Although he was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy, he decided to attend the University of Maryland. During World War
II, he served as a sergeant in the Army and worked in several hospitals in the Middle East and India.
In 1946, he joined the Board of Agriculture, then under the auspices of the University of Maryland and predecessor to the Maryland
Department of Agriculture. He worked as a chemist until retiring in 1974.
In addition to his work with the Board of Agriculture, he served as Riverdale town treasurer for more than 35 years. In retirement, he
was a consultant for companies seeking to do business in Riverdale.
He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Hyattsville and the Riverdale Lions Club.
His wife, Rosemary Wheatley Fuerst, died in 2003.
Survivors include five children, Robert G. Fuerst Jr., Mark Fuerst and Winship Fuerst, all of Riverdale, Catherine Burnside of
Louisville, Ky., and Edith Maul of Galloway, N.J.; a sister; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
